Zac Purton faces a challenging yet pivotal choice as he decides to ride Sagacious Life in the upcoming Classic Mile, scheduled for next month. This decision comes after he scrutinized an impressive array of contenders, which included notable names like Invincible Ibis, Little Paradise, Beauty Bolt, and Top Dragon.
Purton himself acknowledges that this year’s Classic Mile might be one of the most fiercely contested in recent memory, and grappling with such a selection has certainly been a source of stress for him over the past few months. Ultimately, he has opted for Sagacious Life, a Brazilian import trained by Pierre Ng Pang-chi, who boasts a Group One victory from his previous racing season in 2024.
Since arriving in Hong Kong, Sagacious Life has made quite the impression, winning two out of three starts, including a standout performance last month in the Class Two Leighton Handicap (1,600m), where he impressively carried 135lb to secure a win, finishing ahead of Top Dragon, who placed third.
This remarkable display of skill under heavy weight was a key factor in Purton's decision-making process. "At the end of the day, Sagacious Life holds the highest rating, which is significant in a set-weight race like this. All four-year-olds at this time of year are largely untapped potential," stated Purton.
He elaborated, "We don't truly know their limits just yet, but his track record shows he has performed exceptionally well in three races and notably won at this distance while carrying top weight of 135. Given that he’s only 1,050lb, he isn’t particularly large, so handling that weight against a tough field should serve him well in the forthcoming race."
As an eight-time champion jockey, Purton has had the opportunity to ride every leading contender to victory at various points this season, including the crowd favorite, Invincible Ibis, trained by Mark Newnham. Other strong candidates like Little Paradise and Top Dragon were also high on Purton’s list of potentials. He did not take his decision lightly, recognizing the merits of each horse involved.
"Every horse in the running has its advantages. Invincible Ibis keeps getting better with every race. While he may still be building his confidence, he’s showing substantial improvement. He runs well at a distance and has plenty going for him. Meanwhile, Little Paradise has been performing remarkably, and his recent win was impressive, defeating a strong field and clocking a quick time. Top Dragon was simply unlucky against Sagacious Life recently; he can't be ruled out, and Beauty Bolt consistently shows up for every race, nearly clinching a win just this past Sunday."
Despite the abundance of talent to choose from, Purton is acutely aware that his ultimate choice might not yield the desired outcome. However, he has reconciled himself with this reality as he approaches what promises to be an exceptionally competitive Classic Mile.
"In the end, I have to select just one out of seven options, and if any of the other six horses cross the finish line first, it means I made the wrong choice," Purton reflected. "It's a difficult position to be in because I share good relationships with the owners and trainers of the horses I've ridden, and they’ve given me the chance to compete on these talented steeds. This year has been unique because each contender has consistently shown up and performed well, placing themselves in contention not just to participate but to be serious competitors in this prestigious race."
Hugh Bowman will continue to ride Invincible Ibis after leading him to victory recently, while Vincent Ho Chak-yiu has secured the ride on Little Paradise.
