The Great Woolworths Delivery Debate: Uncovering the Cheapest Option
In the ever-evolving world of online grocery shopping, Australia's largest supermarket, Woolworths, has introduced yet another delivery platform, leaving shoppers with a plethora of choices. But here's where it gets controversial: which option is actually the most cost-effective?
Let's dive into the world of Woolworths deliveries and uncover the secrets behind their pricing.
DoorDash: A New Player in the Game
DoorDash has recently partnered with Woolworths, offering customers an additional delivery option. With promises of 'more choice for last-minute top-ups', it's an enticing proposition. But is it the cheapest?
We tested DoorDash by adding common grocery items to our cart: bread, bananas, milk, laundry liquid, rice, and eggs. The total came to $61.05, but with a bag fee and service fee, the final price was $68.88. DoorDash charges a service fee ranging from $4.99 to $11.99, and in our case, it was $7.33. An interesting find, right?
The Woolworths Website: A Costly Convenience?
Surprisingly, the same items on the Woolworths website were slightly cheaper, totaling $56.50. However, when factoring in the bag and delivery fees, the price jumped to $73.00. Woolworths offers a $2 delivery fee if you plan ahead, but there's a catch: you need to spend at least $50 and allow a six-hour window for delivery.
UberEats: A Familiar Face
UberEats, a well-known player in the delivery game, offers identical prices to DoorDash for Woolworths groceries. Our test basket came to $61.05, and with a service fee of $5.99, the total was $66.40. However, UberEats subscribers can enjoy promotions, like the one we received, waiving the delivery fee and offering additional credits.
Milkrun: Woolworths' In-House Hero?
Milkrun, Woolworths' own rapid delivery service, offers similar prices to DoorDash and UberEats. In our test, the laundry liquid and rice were slightly more expensive, while the eggs and milk were cheaper. The total came to $61.70, and Milkrun waived the $5 delivery fee. With an ETA of 52 minutes, it's a convenient and cost-effective option.
In-Store Shopping: The Timeless Classic
Heading to the nearest Woolworths, we found identical prices to the website, except for bananas, which were sold by weight. Our basket totaled $56.53, making in-store shopping the cheapest option.
The Verdict: Unveiling the Truth
As expected, in-store shopping is the most economical and time-consuming choice. But the real surprise is that the Woolworths website is the most expensive option for same-day delivery. Our basket cost $20 more when considering the delivery fee. Milkrun emerges as the most convenient and value-for-money option, especially for those seeking a quick delivery.
A Woolworths spokesperson emphasized the range of options available to meet customer demands for fast and flexible delivery. They highlighted the additional costs associated with 'express' options, and the availability of free click-and-collect services for those who plan ahead.
So, which delivery option will you choose? The debate is open, and we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments! Is convenience worth the extra cost, or do you prefer the traditional in-store experience?
