Dear Penn Community,
As we embark on the Spring Semester of 2026, I want to share some exciting updates and reflections on our university's journey. Penn's rich history and its connection to the revolutionary era are truly remarkable. We are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the country and our university's significant role in shaping it. From interactive programming to insightful resources, there are numerous ways to explore and engage with this pivotal moment in history.
Throughout the year, the Penn community and Philadelphia will commemorate this anniversary in various ways. The Penn Libraries have created an impressive array of resources, and I encourage everyone to learn more and get involved. Our university's historic firsts and contributions to the world are truly inspiring, and I am proud to be a part of this legacy. Penn's focus on the future is another defining characteristic, shared by our founder, Benjamin Franklin.
The Penn Forward process is a prime example of bold planning for the future. Provost Jackson, EVP Dingfield, and I are now debriefing with the six working groups to learn about their insights and recommendations. These groups have worked diligently to canvas for ideas, garner relevant data, and generate tangible proposals that will position Penn to lead and be even more impactful over the next decade. As many of these proposals become implementable actions, we will be in touch with updates later this semester.
A forward-facing stance empowers us with agility, resilience, and hope. Together, we will adapt and fulfill our missions with the highest degree of excellence, position our University as a leader in serving a society that is changing faster than ever, and take a hand in shaping the future rather than being resigned to it. These are inspiring resolutions for the new year, and I hope you all had a fun and restful winter break. Whether you spent time with loved ones, traveled somewhere new, or just relaxed with some favorite shows, welcome back and best wishes for a great spring semester and a productive 2026 at Penn!
Warm regards,
J. Larry Jameson, MD, Ph.D.
