A fascinating insight into the world of Formula 1 psychology has emerged, and it's a story that will leave you questioning the power of the mind and its impact on performance.
The Cost of Mental Support in the Fast Lane
Sergio Perez, a renowned Formula 1 driver, has shared an intriguing anecdote about his time with Red Bull. In an interview, he revealed that the team funded a psychologist to help him through a challenging period, and the fee? A whopping £6,000 for a single hour-long session.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Perez joined Red Bull in 2021, stepping into a team where his predecessors had struggled. While he managed a victory that year, it paled in comparison to his teammate Max Verstappen's dominant performance, who secured 10 grand prix wins and a world title.
"They told me, 'You need a psychologist, it's time to see one'," Perez recalled. And so, he did.
"It was £6,000 for one call," he laughed, recalling the bill he received at the Red Bull factory. He quickly passed it on to Helmut Marko, the Red Bull advisor, who footed the bill.
And this is the part most people miss...
Perez believes that this single call, this session with the psychologist, was the turning point. He felt 'cured', and his results improved.
"The call worked," he said.
However, Perez's struggles continued relative to Verstappen, and his performance dipped in 2024, leading to his exit from the squad. He admitted, "I knew perfectly well that when you have a car that makes you think about crashing, you can't go fast."
In the face of adversity, Perez sought help, and his story highlights the importance of mental strength in high-pressure environments.
So, what do you think? Is mental health support in sports a necessity or an overindulgence? Could a single call really make such a difference? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
