Quectel's New FGH200M Wi-Fi HaLow Module Targets Long-Range Massive IoT Deployments
Quectel has unveiled the FGH200M, a groundbreaking Wi-Fi HaLow module designed to revolutionize long-range IoT connectivity. This module is a game-changer for remote IoT devices, offering high-throughput connectivity at impressive ranges of up to a kilometer (0.62 miles) and supporting an astonishing 8,000 device connections per module. But here's where it gets interesting: despite its long-range capabilities, the FGH200M operates at a very low power consumption, making it ideal for mass-scale IoT deployments.
Delbert Sun, from Quectel, expressed excitement about the FGH200M's capabilities: "We're thrilled to introduce the FGH200M, an ultra-compact module that seamlessly blends long-range transmission, low power consumption, and exceptional performance for large-scale IoT deployments. Its combination of network performance, efficiency, and robustness will be a valuable asset for our customers."
The FGH200M is built upon the Morse Micro MM8108 chipset, which connects to the host system via USB 2.0, SDIO 2.0, or Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). This chipset enables IEEE 802.11ah Wi-Fi HaLow connectivity, a specialized version of the standard Wi-Fi protocol that operates in the license-free 850-950MHz sub-gigahertz band. This unique frequency range allows for a tenfold increase in range without boosting transmission or reception power, making it highly energy-efficient.
However, there's a trade-off: the FGH200M's throughput is 43.3Mb/s, which is lower than modern Wi-Fi chipsets, even those designed for low power. The module supports channel widths of 1, 2, 4, and 8MHz, with a maximum output power of 26dBm. While precise power statistics are not yet available, Quectel claims the module can theoretically support up to 8,191 devices, showcasing its potential for massive IoT deployments.
