Onondaga County residents are facing a growing trash problem! The contracted waste removal company, Superior Waste Removal, is struggling to keep up with garbage and recycling collections in the towns of Cicero and Clay. This issue has left residents frustrated, with trash piling up on their curbs.
But here's where it gets controversial: the reasons for the delays are multifaceted. According to Cicero's new supervisor, Rob Santucci, the hauler is facing challenges due to heavy snowfall, holiday disruptions, and a surprising 25% surge in recycling materials. This has resulted in a backlog of one to three days in some areas, with the company falling significantly behind schedule.
In Clay, the recent switch to Superior Waste Removal has also contributed to the issue. Clay Supervisor Damian Ulatowski acknowledged the growing pains as the company adjusts to new routes. The recent near-record snowfalls have only exacerbated the situation.
Superior Waste Removal, overwhelmed with inquiries, has been unable to respond promptly to media requests for comment. However, Cicero's supervisor, Santucci, has been in frequent communication with the company's management. He assures residents that Superior has added two more trucks to their fleet and encourages those affected to contact the hauler directly if their pickup is delayed.
Santucci empathizes with residents' concerns, stating, "We understand the frustration and are doing everything possible to resolve this." He appeals for patience while they work with the hauler to address the issue.
And this is the part most people miss: while the company has promised to catch up on Cicero's pickups by the weekend, the situation raises questions about waste management resilience during challenging weather conditions and unexpected surges in recycling. Could this be a wake-up call for better contingency planning in the waste management sector?
What do you think? Are these delays an inevitable consequence of the holiday season and harsh weather, or is there more that could have been done to prevent this situation? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
