A thrilling rugby spectacle unfolded at the StoneX Stadium as Saracens dominated Newcastle in a 73-14 Gallagher Premiership clash. The game was a much-needed response to Saracens' recent struggles, including a heavy defeat to Glasgow.
The Rising Star
Noah Caluori, a 19-year-old wing, stole the show with an incredible four tries, showcasing his exceptional finishing skills. Despite being overlooked for England's Six Nations squad, Caluori proved his worth on the pitch.
But here's where it gets controversial... Saracens' director of rugby, Mark McCall, announced his departure after 15 seasons, adding to the team's turmoil. Despite these challenges, Saracens displayed an impressive performance, scoring ten tries against the Gallagher Prem's bottom-placed team.
The game started with a bang as Newcastle almost scored two touchdowns within five minutes, but Saracens' defense held strong. The visitors' high-energy start was met with a penalty try for Saracens, followed by a stunning chip-and-chase try by Rotimi Segun.
The Battle of the Wings
Elliot Daly set up Caluori's first try, outpacing his opponent Elliot Obatoyinbo. The rivalry between these two wings intensified, leading to a brawl that involved Freddie Lockwood. Caluori's second try showcased his ability to beat defenders, and Obatoyinbo's afternoon took a turn for the worse with a yellow card for offside.
Saracens secured the bonus point early in the second half, with Andy Onyeama-Christie finishing a powerful run. Tom Willis and Nick Isiekwe also made their mark, and Caluori completed his hat-trick. James Hadfield added to Saracens' lead with a line-out drive.
The home pack's dominance took its toll on Newcastle, with Eroni Mawi and Hadfield crossing the line. Caluori's raw speed was on full display as he scored his fourth try, assisted by Nick Tompkins. Tompkins then grabbed Saracens' final touchdown, before Newcastle managed a late consolation try through Reuben Parsons.
In other Gallagher Premiership action, Leicester Tigers humbled Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop, winning 36-7. Jack van Poortvliet, Leicester's scrum-half, was in top form, driving his team forward and involved in key attacks.
And this is the part most people miss... Van Poortvliet, recently named in the England training squad, could be in line to start at No. 9 for the opening Championship game against Wales, potentially edging out Ben Spencer.
In a gritty battle at Sandy Park, Bristol Bears completed a double over Exeter Chiefs, winning 8-3.
So, what do you think? Was Caluori's performance a sign of things to come, or just a flash in the pan? And will Van Poortvliet's electric form earn him a starting spot for England? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
