Martian Manhunter's DC Universe Debut Teased by James Gunn with Cryptic Photos
It seems another classic DC Comics superhero is joining the new DC Universe. Director James Gunn is in pre-production for his upcoming movie, "Man of Tomorrow," a sequel to last year's "Superman." We know David Corenswet will return as Clark Kent/Superman, and Nicholas Hoult will reprise his role as Lex Luthor. Beyond that, much remains a mystery, except for the confirmation that Lars Eidinger will portray the villain Brainiac. However, a recent cryptic post from Gunn hints at the imminent introduction of Martian Manhunter.
Gunn shared a set design photo with the caption, "Set design in Chocos. #Superman." While he didn't elaborate further, this subtle reference is significant for fans familiar with Martian Manhunter's peculiar taste in cookies. In 2024, Gunn hinted at Martian Manhunter's potential inclusion in the DC Universe, alluding to his love for Chocos cookies. This could suggest a prominent role for the character in "Man of Tomorrow."
Martian Manhunter, also known as J'onn, has a long-standing history in DC Comics, debuting in "Detective Comics" #225 in 1955. Created by writer Joseph Samachson and artist Joe Certa, he has been a staple of the DC Universe, especially as a member of the Justice League. The character also has a strong connection to "Justice League International," a title that James Gunn is adapting. In the comics, Martian Manhunter shares a fondness for Chocos cookies, which are similar to Oreos.
Even if Martian Manhunter doesn't appear physically in the film, the DC Universe has numerous projects in development, including "Supergirl" and "Clayface" this year. Other shows like "Lanterns" and "Booster Gold" are also in the works. As for "Man of Tomorrow," Gunn has ruled out a Wonder Woman appearance, so fans shouldn't expect a rushed or overcrowded cast. If Martian Manhunter is indeed in the movie, we can expect an official announcement on the casting front soon.
"Man of Tomorrow" is set to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.
