In a thrilling showdown, Leinster showcased their resilience by overcoming Bayonne in a gripping finale to their Investec Champions Cup pool stage. The match saw them secure victory with two late tries, but it came at a cost as key Irish players Tadhg Furlong, Robbie Henshaw, and Tommy O'Brien all sustained injuries during the contest.
With just six minutes left on the clock in the Basque Country, Sam Prendergast and Max Deegan made crucial contributions to turn the tide for Leinster, who have now extended their unbeaten streak to 31 pool matches. This remarkable achievement comes against a Bayonne team that had previously struggled, failing to earn a match point in their last three European outings.
The four points gained from this win ensured that Leinster emerged as the leaders of Pool 3. However, head coach Leo Cullen's team must now await the outcomes of other matches over the weekend, particularly the fixtures involving Glasgow against Saracens and Bristol versus Bordeaux, to determine their final seeding ahead of the knockout stages.
As the Six Nations tournament looms just over two weeks away, Ireland’s head coach Andy Farrell is undoubtedly concerned about Furlong’s calf injury, hoping it is not severe given the limited options already available in the front row.
Leinster entered this match having already secured their place in the next round with earlier victories against formidable opponents including Harlequins, Leicester, and La Rochelle. Consequently, this game carried less pressure, which was evident in the opening exchanges where the home team appeared more energetic and engaged.
Despite having no stakes in European competition, Grégory Patat’s squad is known for its impressive home record, remaining unbeaten at their Top 14 venue since April 2024. Unfortunately for Leinster, discipline proved again to be a challenge, as they conceded a total of nine penalties. Bayonne capitalized on this early lapse; an illegal aerial challenge by Tommy O'Brien on full-back Cheikh Tiberghien allowed them to open the scoring.
Following a swift lineout, Yohan Orabe skillfully maneuvered off his wing and combined with center Sireli Maqala, who easily darted under the posts, raising concerns about Leinster’s defensive lapses. Just before play resumed, Furlong was substituted for Thomas Clarkson due to reports of his tight calf.
Although Joshua Kenny and Jimmy O'Brien made some effective counter-attacks, it was Harry Byrne who eventually got Leinster on the scoreboard with a penalty after Kenny's effort in the corner was denied. However, this momentum was short-lived as out-half Joris Segonds quickly responded with a long-range penalty following a lineout infringement, pushing Bayonne back into the lead. The situation worsened for Leinster when Henshaw had to leave the pitch due to a knee injury shortly before halftime.
After a disallowed try for Clarkson due to a double movement, Bayonne had two opportunities to extend their lead but were thwarted by a significant tackle from Deegan, allowing the hosts to go into the break with a 10-3 advantage.
At the start of the second half, Tommy O'Brien also pulled up with a calf injury, adding to Leinster's woes. The match became increasingly scrappy as Jantjies received a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. This opened the door for Dan Sheehan, who capitalized on an offload from Jimmy O'Brien to score, with Byrne’s conversion leveling the game.
Segonds, however, wasted no time in reclaiming the lead with another penalty from his own half due to a breakdown infringement. Leinster seemed poised to take the upper hand when Jimmy O'Brien gathered a clever kick from Sam Prendergast, but after the conversion, the TMO alerted referee Luke Pearce to a potential fumble prior to the touchdown.
The Bayonne defense held firm despite intense pressure from Leinster, and Segonds missed another penalty attempt from a distance. With the clock ticking down, Leinster attacked within the 22, appearing stagnant until Byrne executed a masterful chip that bounced perfectly for Prendergast, allowing him to score beneath the posts.
Crucial contributions from replacements Joe McCarthy and Scott Penny led to a midfield penalty that set the stage for the decisive try. Seizing an opportunity from an overthrow, Sheehan played a pivotal role as Deegan dove over in the corner to secure the victory.
This match showcased both the challenges and triumphs faced by Leinster as they navigate their path through the competition.
