The Bears are shaking things up with a strategic move in their offensive coaching staff. They've decided to promote Press Taylor, a passing game coordinator, to the role of offensive coordinator. Taylor, who was brought in by Ben Johnson during the initial staff assembly, will take over from Declan Doyle, who has moved on to become the Ravens' offensive coordinator. This move signifies a shift in the Bears' offensive strategy, with Taylor's expertise in the passing game expected to play a pivotal role in the team's future success.
Taylor's journey in the NFL began as an offensive quality control coach for the Eagles in 2013, where he worked his way up to become the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for Philadelphia in 2020. He then moved to the Colts as a senior offensive assistant in 2021, before landing his first offensive coordinator role with the Jaguars from 2022 to 2024. During his time with the Jaguars, Taylor's offensive strategies contributed to the team finishing 10th in both points and yards in his inaugural season, showcasing his ability to craft effective game plans.
However, the Jaguars' performance took a turn in the following seasons. The team slipped to 13th in scoring and yards in 2023, and further declined to 25th in scoring and 26th in yards in Taylor's final season. This decline led to a significant organizational shake-up, but Taylor's role in Chicago will be different.
Despite his previous experience as a play-caller, Taylor will not be responsible for play-calling in Chicago. Instead, he will assist head coach Ben Johnson in installing the game plan and maintaining the offensive momentum that has seen the team score its highest number of points since 2013. With a talented core of players, including quarterback Caleb Williams, running backs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, and pass catchers Rome Odunze, DJ Moore, Luther Burden III, and Colston Loveland, the Bears are poised for continued success under Johnson and Taylor's leadership.
