Beachfront Outdoor Gym: A Bold Move Forward with Community Goals
Plans have been unveiled for a free, open-air gym on the beach that could be ready for use as soon as next year. If they gain approval, the project would install 10 workout stations along the seafront near The Strand in Walmer, adjacent to the existing Roman Landings Adventure Golf course.
The idea first surfaced in May 2023, proposing a line of fitness apparatus along the town’s promenade. After consulting with industry experts, it was decided that the greatest community benefit would come from placing the equipment in a high-footfall area to boost social interaction, enabling groups to train together.
Walmer Town Council (WTC) has now submitted plans to Dover District Council (DDC) for the new facility.
Architects from The Smith Group, based in Whitfield, describe the project as offering multiple community advantages. They state the facility will feature a diverse selection of high-quality cardio, strength, and cross-training equipment designed to mimic the advantages of an indoor gym within an open-air coastal setting.
The emphasis is on multi-functional, inclusive, and accessible equipment to ensure usability across a broad range of users and to promote year-round participation. The proposal is presented as a valuable, thoughtfully considered enhancement to Walmer’s seafront, delivering a free and inclusive space that encourages more people to engage in physical activity.
Access to the gym will be free for individuals aged 13 and older. Talks are also progressing with DDC to secure a lease for using the beach space for the equipment.
Public feedback gathered by WTC in April 2024 showed strong support, with 87% of respondents indicating they would use the outdoor facility. To date, 53 comments have been posted on DDC’s planning portal, and none oppose the plan.
Supportive views include Sally Russell, who said: “There are many physical and mental benefits to regular exercise, and there are few free options for people to enjoy a variety of activities.” She added that the facility would be a valuable asset and something the town could be proud of.
Samuel Hursey commented: “This would make great use of the space, providing a chance to improve people’s physical and mental health without needing to pay for a private gym.”
One concern noted is the site’s flood risk, as it sits within flood risk zone three.
A final decision from DDC is anticipated in early next year.
